Webmaster's
note: In May 2009, Ian performed in a charity event donating
concert profits of £7971.16 to"Flutewise,"
a UK-based charitable foundation creating possibilities for
young people to develop flute-playing skills and attend educational
events, summer schools, master classes, etc. Here's a summary
of the event from the sponsor.
Flutewise,
an educational charity for young flute players, held an exciting
event at the Barbican Centre and Guildhall School of Music and
Drama in May 2009, Flutewise Live!
By all accounts it was an amazing and totally successful event.
So many flute players of every age and standard took part and
there were activities going on throughout the day that kept
everyone happy.
Flutewise is extremely grateful to everyone who supported this
event - all the people who came, the fabulous professional musicians
who donated their time and expertise, our friends from the shops
and every single one of the helpers. Most of all our thanks
must go to Ian Anderson and James Duncan. Without them this
event would not have been possible. So a huge thank you to them
for their incredible musical talents, support and generosity.
If you missed it, a brief description of the event is that we
started and ended the day event with flute choir pieces; there
were performances all day long on both foyers of the Barbican
Centre; there were performances and workshops galore in the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama; Simon Desorgher demonstrated
his flutes and computers
all
day outside the huge room which was full of flute shops which
had loads of flutes, music and accessories for people to try
and buy. In the evening we had the pleasure of an amazing concert
with Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, band and friends. The
friends were Abbie Burrows (playing on her crystal encrusted
flute), Ian Clarke and Alex Teymour Housego.
We were extremely fortunate to have our Flutewise Artist of
the Year 2007, Ian Anderson at the event and starring in the
evening concert. Also present was our Artist of the Year 2008,
Ian Clarke and our Artist of the Year for 2009, Matej Zupan.
To mark the occassion, all three appeared together on stage
to perform Bach’s Bouree and they were each presented
with one of those coloured flutes that everyone wants even though
we know they are rubbish but they look so cool! Ian
Ian Anderson was presented with his choice of colour, a black
one; Ian Clarke had a red one which he said his daughters will
like and Matej’s was blue.
